Beginner\u2019s Guide<\/h2>

Welcome! If you\u2019re new to line dancing, you\u2019re in the right place. Line dancing is a fun, social, and easy way to get moving\u2014no partner needed! Our classes are designed to be friendly and supportive, so everyone can learn at their own pace.<\/p>

What to Expect<\/h3>

  • You\u2019ll learn step-by-step routines set to music<\/p><\/li>

  • Dances are repeated, so you\u2019ll pick them up quickly<\/p><\/li>

  • No experience required\u2014just come ready to have fun!<\/p><\/li>

  • Mistakes are part of learning\u2014just keep dancing!<\/p><\/li><\/ul>

    What to Wear<\/h3>

    • Comfortable clothes you can move in<\/p><\/li>

    • Shoes with smooth soles (not too sticky)<\/p><\/li>

    • Cowboy boots are welcome, but not required!<\/p><\/li><\/ul>

      Basic Line Dance Terms<\/h2>

      Here are common terms you\u2019ll hear in class:<\/p>

      Foundations<\/h3>

      Counts<\/strong> \u2013 The number of beats in a dance (example: 32-count)
      Wall<\/strong> \u2013 The direction you\u2019re facing (4-wall = all four directions)
      Step<\/strong> \u2013 Transfer weight onto a foot
      Touch<\/strong> \u2013 Tap without weight
      Hold<\/strong> \u2013 Pause for a beat
      Restart<\/strong> \u2013 Start the dance again early
      Tag<\/strong> \u2013 Extra steps added during the dance<\/p>

      Common Steps<\/h3>

      Grapevine<\/strong> \u2013 Side, behind, side, touch\/step
      Shuffle (Triple Step)<\/strong> \u2013 Step together step
      Walk<\/strong> \u2013 Step forward or back, one foot at a time
      Kick<\/strong> \u2013 Small forward flick of the foot
      Step-Touch<\/strong> \u2013 Step to the side, touch the other foot in
      Toe Strut<\/strong> \u2013 Step toe, then drop heel
      Heel Dig<\/strong> \u2013 Touch heel forward
      Ball Change<\/strong> \u2013 Quick weight change (ball-step)
      Rock Step<\/strong> \u2013 Rock weight forward\/back and recover
      Side Rock<\/strong> \u2013 Rock side and recover<\/p>

      Turns & Direction Changes<\/h3>

      Pivot Turn<\/strong> \u2013 Step forward, turn, change direction
      Half Turn (\u00bd Turn)<\/strong> \u2013 Turn 180 degrees
      Quarter Turn (\u00bc Turn)<\/strong> \u2013 Turn 90 degrees
      Full Turn<\/strong> \u2013 Turn 360 degrees
      Monterey Turn<\/strong> \u2013 Point, turn, step together<\/p>

      Jazz Box<\/strong> \u2013 Cross, back, side, forward
      Weave<\/strong> \u2013 Side, behind, side, cross
      Cross Shuffle<\/strong> \u2013 Cross step with a shuffle rhythm
      Sailor Step<\/strong> \u2013 Behind, side, step in place
      Coaster Step<\/strong> \u2013 Back, together, forward
      Lock Step<\/strong> \u2013 Step forward, lock behind, step forward
      Scuff<\/strong> \u2013 Brush heel forward
      Stomp<\/strong> \u2013 Step with emphasis
      Swivel<\/strong> \u2013 Twist heels or toes side to side<\/p>

      Rhythm & Style<\/h3>

      Syncopation<\/strong> \u2013 Quick steps between beats
      Styling<\/strong> \u2013 Adding your own flair (arms, attitude, etc.)
      Improver Level<\/strong> \u2013 A step above beginner, with more turns and patterns<\/p>

      Tips for Beginners<\/h3>

      • Don\u2019t worry about getting everything right the first time<\/p><\/li>

      • Watch the instructor and others around you<\/p><\/li>

      • Start in the back row if you feel shy<\/p><\/li>
